Slab leaks are one of those problems that often go unnoticed until they’ve already caused damage. At Villas Plumbing & Air Conditioning, we’ve seen it all, and the first sign homeowners usually notice is water on the floor.

However, one of the most reliable early indicators is a running water meter. Many times, your city water provider will notify you if they detect unusual usage—even if you haven’t spotted any issues yet.

Central Texas Slab Leak Problems

There are several factors that can lead to a slab leak. Foundation shifts and geographic movement are two of the most common culprits, especially here in Central Texas where soil conditions can be unstable. Tree roots can also apply pressure to underground lines. The type of pipe used plays a big role as well.

Some materials that were commonly installed in the early 2000s have since been outlawed due to long-term reliability issues. Age is another factor.

Over time, even the best materials wear down, and galvanized lines in older homes are especially prone to failure. Excessive water pressure can also strain the system and eventually cause cracks or bursts.

Leak Detection

To determine if there’s a slab leak, we start with a hydrostatic test to confirm that water is escaping somewhere in the system. It’s worth noting that something as simple as a running toilet can mimic the symptoms of a slab leak, so testing is important.

Once we’ve confirmed a leak, we’ll isolate different sections of the home’s water system to narrow down the location. We also isolate the yard from the house to rule out an exterior line leak. From there, we use specialized equipment to pinpoint the exact source of the problem.

Repair Options

Most of the time, the best repair option is a reroute. Instead of digging into the foundation, we abandon the damaged line and run a new pipe through the house to restore water to the affected area. In more extensive cases, a full repipe may be necessary.

At Villas Plumbing & Air Conditioning, we aim to offer solutions that are effective, minimally invasive, and built to last.
